If you would like to send donations directly to churches in the Houston, Texas area that are working to help hurricane victims from Louisiana and points east, these churches in my area are already stretching their resources to do so:
Clear Lake Church of Christ is collecting phone, gas or Wal-Mart cards to distribute to the victims. If you want to give cash instead, they will purchase the needed cards. They ask that we take the cards to their building located at 938 El Dorado. I’m sure they’ll accept donations by mail, too.
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church has opened as a shelter for storm refugees in Houston. They have a list of needs on their website.

Clear Lake Baptist Church and Bay Area Christian Church are both serving meals daily to hurricane refugees. They could use servers and cooks if you live in the area and donations if you do not.
Other churches are helping, too, and Houston officials are offering the Astrodome to New Orleans Superdome refugees. You can read about that effort here. The following churches are also opened as emergency shelters:
