Saturday Review of Books: November 28, 2009

“A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up children without surrounding them with books. . . . Children learn to read being in the presence of books.”~Horace Mann

Do you agree with Mr. Mann? Did you grow up in a house filled with books? Were you led to be a reader by the example of either or both of your parents?

Welcome to this week’s Saturday Review of Books.

Here’s how it usually works. Find a review on your blog posted sometime this week of a book you’re reading or a book you’ve read. The review doesn’t have to be a formal sort of thing. You can just write your thoughts on a particular book, a few ideas inspired by reading the book, your evaluation, quotations, whatever.

Now post a link here to the specific post where you’ve written your book review. Don’t link to your main blog page because this kind of link makes it hard to find the book review, especially when people drop in later after you’ve added new content to your blog. In parentheses after your name, add the title of the book you’re reviewing. This addition will help people to find the reviews they’re most interested in reading.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

  1. I don’t think it’s a coincidence the fact that I started posting reviews here and now I’m on pace to blow away my Books Read in a Year record.

  2. I was absolutely led by my parents’ example. We always had books in the house, and we were encouraged to read everyday. My parents are avid readers as well–my mom always had a book in progress. I hope we are encouraging my kids as well–they have their own bookshelves and books, and we read to them at least once a day, usually twice or more. I can’t wait until they can read and start choosing books and series to read!
