OK, I’m tired of trying to defeat the comment spammers. Any suggestions? I already had to turn off trackbacks because they were using those to get through my comment filters. I already have certain words blocked–which causes problems for honest people trying to comment when they happen to have one of the blocked words in their comment. So what else can I do—other than turning off comments altogether?
(1) You can add a captcha. It cuts down on spam bot comments by requiring someone to manually type in a given word or number to register comments. (2) You can add moveable type programs that have black lists of certain IP addresses and URLS. (3) You can rename the comment link so that bots searching for a comment cgi files can’t find yours. (4) You can insert type that leads all links through a specific URL, and block them from raising their Google rankins. (5) you can block people from being able to list a URL/link in their comments. (6) There are all sorts of filters out there. (7) Jay Allen’s comment spam black list. etc. (8) Delete all comments and trackbacks that are more than a couple days old. (9) Go to boingboing for comments, so that you can still have conversations. (10) You can add something that forces people to preview their comments before leaving them, and that can cut down on spam. There’s a lot out there to help, but spam will always be around.fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
