Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel
Daniel by Elton John
I know Billy Joel is an atheist, and Elton John is a homos*xual. But I still like some of their songs.
I wasn’t raised Catholic, but I used to go to Mass with my friends, and I viewed the whole business as a lot of very enthralling hocus-pocus. There’s a guy hanging upon the wall in the church, nailed to a cross and dripping blood, and everybody’s blaming themselves for that man’s torment, but I said to myself, ‘Forget it. I had no hand in that evil. I have no original sin. There’s no blood of any sacred martyr in my hands. I pass on all of this’. . . I believe that all important matters have to be settled here, not in the clouds somewhere after we kick off. -Billy Joel
I know that I am a sinner – but people still seem to like me. 🙂
God has given both these guys incredible talent. Their abilities with music show part of the nature of God. They were made in his image. I hope and pray that they will reach out to God and enter his kingdom.
You’re right, Rodney. I just always have this nasty fear when I’m dealing with nonChristian artists that I will find out that there’s some ugly hidden-beneath-the-surface meaning in one of my favorite songs or artworks that I, in my naivete, totally missed. As far as I’m concerned, the Billy Joel song is a song about loving someone just the way they are, and Daniel is about missing someone who’s gone out of your life. If either song is really about something else, please don’t tell me. I think I’d rather be ignorant.
I think you’re pretty safe with both those songs Sherry. I’ve got to say that I think they’re both classics.
I know Billy Joel is an atheist, and Elton John is a homos*xual. But I still like some of their songs. Me too!
