A bookcase headboard is a wonderful thing. Engineer Husband built our bed and headboard a long time ago. If you don’t have a bookcase built into your bed, I suggest a small bookshelf near the bed. Where else can you keep those books you’re planning to read as soon as you can get to them? Stacks on the floor are neither aesthetically pleasing nor convenient to access.
So, my simple works-for-me Wednesday tip for readers is: keep those books near the bed in the headboard or in a small bookshelf. Then, read yourself to sleep.
I would love to have a bookcase headboard! I don’t think it will ever happen, though. So we’ll have to continue to make do with books on the nightstands and, yes, books stacked on the floor. (We also have two floor-to-ceiling bookcases across the room from the bed, but they’re not within arm’s-reach distance from the bed.)
I love having books easily available by the bed. I’m afraid I’ve been doing the unattractive stack on the floor thing, though. I did have an attractive basket, but it has since left for another use. My son’s bed has the bookcase headboard and it is great for keeping his current reading books handy and organized.
Agreed. I have a small bookshelf near my bedside. Indispensible.
You’ve got to be careful about those bookcase headboards. My dad made my parents a custom bed, including shelves going all the way to the ceiling.
Then I went through my first earthquake. As i looked at all the books on the floor when I got home, I got a bit worried. earthquakes can come in the middle of the night and not just during the day! Arter expressing my concern to my parents, they took the bookcase off of above their bed.
Probably one or two shelves above the bed would not have the same problem. But from the top of the bookcase, they’d gather quite a wallop before they landed on the helpless person sleeping below!
GREAT idea! Thanks for sharing ! 🙂
This is SO up my alley. I’m a book fanatic and usually have tons on my bedside table. 🙂
My stack of books on the nightstand is definitely getting too high. I would hate to reach for a tissue in the middle of the night, and send all of the books crashing to the floor. I like the headboard idea!
Thanks also for contributing to my “cool girls” list the other day. I can’t believe that I left out Jo March. I think that was one of the biggest omissions from my original list. Thanks for helping me to make the list complete!
