Susan Wise Bauer’s new book, The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome, is available on Amazon for preorder. It’s due out next February (2007).
Stefanie hears voices, a multiplicity of voices telling her to read multiple books. Oh, that I could blame it all on my voices!
Amardeep Singh gives an overview of a discussion in the Indian blogosphere about how to review a book. That’s Indian, as in India. I’m still just amazed that I can sit at my computer in Houston, TX and read the opinion of an Indian reviewer on the latest book or political event or ….. What a wonderful world!
Mr. Dawntreader tells us why men hate Pride and Prejudice. I think he’s got it about three-quarters wrong, but then, he’s a man. You read it and judge for yourself. And if you think he should now be required to READ Pride and Prejudice, leave him a comment.
This series of Russian detective novels sounds interesting. Have any of you read any books by Boris Akunin?
Sherry,
Do you think the 2 hour movie of P&P (made in 2005) misses some important stuff in the book? I have had several people express that opinion to me. What is your take?
I’m not Sherry, but I’ll say that our family found the 2005 P&P disappointing and lacking quite a bit. We found the long BBC version to be pretty faithful to the book, and enjoyed it for that reason.
My husband loves P&P, by the way. He’s a very manly man, and a godly man, and he enjoys a good story. He first read P&P about ten years ago, then went out and bought the movie. He’s watched the movie several times, but I don’t think he’s reread the book. You really might want to read the book. Steve (my husband) thought the Darcy and Bingley characters in the newer movie were horrible. Jane seemed too old, and Lizzie too young, and the other three sisters weren’t developed much. The cast of supporting characters weren’t much to write home about, either. The BBC movie is better, but the book is the best. (Steve’s bona vides: spent 27 years in the USMC, watches football, plays basketball and golf, rarely eats vegetables, never reads enclosed directions or asks directions when lost – he’s pretty much a guy *not* in touch with his feminine side.)
Heck, I’m a manly man (at least, I’ve got four kids, which has to count for something) and I love P&P. Also S&S, and P. NA was OK but a bit silly, I didn’t care so much for E, and I thought MP was a waste of time.
