I posted THE LIST (2006) of books I’d like to read this year (or someday) at the beginning of January. I also keep a running list of movies I’d like to see based on recommendations from others or information gleaned from here and there. So here’s my list of movies that I’d like to see sometime soon. I don’t get in a hurry with movies; I don’t like to pay movie theater prices. So I usually wait until it comes out on video/DVD. Or I might catch a movie at the dollar theater–which I think is up to two dollars around here.
To End All Wars
Amistad
84 Charing Cross Road
Cinderella Man
The Great Raid
The Merchant of Venice
The Touch A documentary about the ministry of First Baptist Church, Leesburg, Florida.
I Have Found ItAn Indian Bollywood version of Sense and Sensibility.
Corrina, Corrina
Something the Lord Made
Walk the Line
Pride and Prejudice No, I haven’t seen it yet. I am still having trouble picturing Keira Knightley playing Elizabeth Bennet.
Beyond the Gates of Splendor A documentary about what happened after the martyrdom of five missionaries in Ecuador in 1956.
The Wrong Man An early Alfred Hitchcock film.
Mrs. Miniver
Marty
Mars Attacks! Parableman recommended this sci/fi comedy. We’ll see if we have the same taste in movies.
End of the Spear Due to be released January 20th, this movie tells the story of Nate Saint and his son Steve, another perspective on the same story Elizabeth Elliot told in Through Gates of Splendor.
Curious George: The Movie Due out in February.
Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest Release date: July 7, 2006.
Have you seen any of these? Did you love it or hate it? Tell me if I’d be wasting my time and (little bit of) money or if any of these are so good that I should see them immediately.
By the way, here’s a link to Semicolon’s 105 Best Movies of All Time, my own eccentric list of what I think are the best movies I’ve ever watched. I wonder if any of the movies on the list above will qualify to be added to the master list. I’m still considering whether or not to add Napoleon Dynamite and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, two recent favorites.
Do not miss 84 Charing Cross Road. It is a book lovers movie if there ever was one. The wonderful Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins…it is terrific.
Treebeard and I saw Walk the Line and really enjoyed it. I received the DVD of Napoleon Dynamite for my Christmas present. It is a favorite of mine too.
I think Curious George looks painful but maybe really little kids will like it.
I also want to see the new Pride and Prejudice. My parents went to see The Producers and absolutely LOVED it. They never saw the Zero Mostel/Gene Wilder version. My mom as asked me twice now if we have seen it yet.
I have never seen the Merchant of Venice performed on stage. The movie was…odd–interesting but…odd.
Walk the Line was good. I also want to see The Great Raid, P&P, End of the Spear, Beyond the Gates, Merchant of Venice, and Dead Man’s Chest. Amistad & Corrina, Corrina are good movies. I’ve heard wonderful things about Something the Lord Made & 84 Charing Cross Road.
I had no problem with Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennett, and I was very surprised by that. I wasn’t crazy about Gena Malone as Lydia, though. Pride and Prejudice, surprisingly is a very good “big screen” movie. The scenery is lush and gorgeous! It was nice to get lost in a favorite story for a couple of hours.
“To End All Wars” was absolutely fantastic – one of the best World War II movies I’ve seen. And we’ve seen most of them cause my husband is a huge WW II buff. He said it was his second favorite – behind the HBO miniseries “Band of Brothers”. This is saying a lot because he re-watches B of B every few months or so.
“The Great Raid” dealt with similar issues – POWs and rescues, but I couldn’t stand it. I thought the acting was wooden – it might have been a better movie if it was re-cast. Joseph Fiennes is the only exception. He was terrific, as always. But Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, and the woman who played the nurse were all mis-cast, in my opinion.
“Cinderella Man” is probably my favorite movie I saw this year. “Walk the Line” is in the top three or four, at least. Both excellent and well worth seeing and spending money on.
I just read about End of the Spear. It sounds very good. I don’t think you’ll be wasting your time or money with P&P, Something the Lord Made, Mrs. Miniver, 84 Charing Cross Road, or Cinderella Man. I hadn’t heard of the Bollywood Sense & Sensibility. Maybe that can be my Bollywood intro.

I’ll
I’m so out of the loop on movies lately–we’ve been saving our pennies by checking videos out from the library and borrowing from friends, which means that it’ll be a long time before I watch current new releases. So, I’ve seen hardly any of the movies on your list! But we did watch Merchant of Venice last year, and didn’t like it at all. Al Pacino did a great job, but the whole movie was really dark and depressing–more so than the play, I think. And the added homosexual tension was VERY weird. We ended up watching the whole thing in hopes it would end well, but overall I’d say it was a waste of time.
I saw “Beyond the Gates…” this week and it was wonderful.
I love almost all of the movies that you mentioned in your “Top 105” so I thought you might enjoy some of these–
The Trip to Bountiful–Geraldine Page/John Heard
Wait Until Dark–Audrey Hepburn
The Scarlet Pimpernel–Jane Seymour/Anthony Andrews
The Quiet Man–John Wayne/Maureen O’Hara
Babette’s Feast–foreign film that makes you think
